Hujjat al-Islam Mariji: There is no contradiction between spirituality and materiality

Head of the Bagher Al-ulum Research Centre said: There is no contradiction between spirituality and materiality, human has both material and spiritual dimensions. Therefore, "spirituality" is not against "wisdom" or "science" instead spirituality is in harmony with "wisdom" and "science".

According to the Public Relations Office of the Islamic Culture and Relations Organization (ICRO), in the speech of Shamsullah Mariji, head of the Bagher Al-ulum Research Centre, with the topic of "Spirituality; the missing circle of modern society" which was on the second day of the first round of inter-religious dialogue between Islam and Hinduism in New Delhi said; Todays modern and technological society, with all its progressive advancements, has not been able to provide a desirable peace of humans mind.

He added; "Thats why there has been a lot of effort to provide a healing version of the comfort to the body, but its obvious that it has never been successful in providing peace of mind.

Mariji continued; The point is that the human society nowadays is suffering from lack of spirituality, the missing circle of modern society is the absence of true spirituality, so the author believes that divine religions can be represented by true spirituality, show the path to those who are looking for truth, as well as keep those materiality humans hopeful of reaching to their lifesavings beach by overcoming the turbulent sea that they are facing.

Head of the Bagher Al-ulum Research Centre continued by asking a question: "What is spirituality?" he said; Nowadays, there are several definitions for spirituality, from the highest humans relationship to the search for an existential meaning, to the transcendent dimension of human, to personal views and behaviours that express the sense of belonging or something beyond it.

He added; the truth is, there is no contradiction between spirituality and materiality, instead they are necessary for each other, human has both material and spiritual dimension. Therefore, "spirituality" is not against "wisdom" or "science", instead spirituality is in harmony with "wisdom" and "science".

Mariji emphasized; Quranic spirituality is based on rationality to form the basis of spirituality as "wisdom", and Semanticism is based on rationalism, because if there is no backing of the wisdoms spirituality it will weaken and retreat the challenges of life. That is why in some Islamic hadiths, wisdom is the leader of believers and humans virtues have been introduced under guard of wisdom.

Speaking about the functions of spirituality, he said: "Undoubtedly, the time humans were involved in astray and complicated anxiety, the spirituality which was recalled in the Quran and its components, the spirituality recited in the Quran can be the healing of modern humanity.

At the end of his speech, he stated; "Undoubtedly, the personal or social goals that a person chooses in life for himself will only be realistic and sustainable, if it is compatible with the present situation of the person in the universe, and on the other hand, will lead to the same ultimate perfection that humans have made to reach that stage.
